The Story Behind Get Lit Ready
The Story Behind Get Lit Ready
Founded in 2026, Get Lit Ready is a Cantonese and Chinese literacy platform established by experienced educators. Our team brings extensive frontline teaching experience across native and second-language pedagogy, curriculum planning, assessment standards, and instructional material design.
Following the move overseas, many families experience a significant shift in their linguistic environment. Cantonese gradually shifts into a secondary language, sharply reducing children's daily exposure and learning time. "I forgot" becomes a familiar phrase at home, while language gaps—understanding without speaking, speaking without reading, or reading without writing—have become a shared challenge for countless diaspora families. As educators and parents living abroad ourselves, we understand these anxieties and hurdles firsthand.
We firmly believe that effective language learning requires sound methodology. It should neither become high-pressure academic drilling nor remain confined solely to passive cultural preservation. By combining modern educational technology with systematic instructional scaffolding, we anchor language learning in real, local everyday experiences. We are dedicated to providing flexible, engaging, and comprehensive learning solutions, guiding learners to build solid foundations with confidence and truly "remember Chinese."
A Balanced Four-Dimensional Approach (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing)
We develop a comprehensive curriculum that seamlessly integrates all four core language skills. Spoken communication, character recognition, reading comprehension, and standard writing conventions are closely linked to ensure well-rounded language proficiency.
Developmentally Aligned Progression
Recognition Before Writing (Decoupling Reading and Writing): Aligned with early childhood fine-motor development, initial stages prioritize visual association, everyday contexts, and spiralled exposure to build a solid vocabulary base—removing the frustration of premature pencil-and-paper drills.
Observation Before Pen Strokes: Moving away from repetitive mechanical copying, we guide learners to deconstruct character components, understand radical-based composition logic, and appreciate structural balance—transitioning from merely reproducing a shape to understanding the underlying orthographic rules.
Borderless Access for Global Independent Learning
By integrating digital tools with structured learning resources, we enable learners worldwide to transcend geographic and time constraints, accessing Cantonese and Traditional Chinese materials suited to their individual proficiency levels.
Structured Pathways for Diverse Learners
While the core framework is tailored to children and youth based on developmental readiness, its adaptable design equally supports adult learners seeking self-directed study in spoken Cantonese and Traditional Chinese literacy.
Founders
Ms. Woo is the co-founder of Get Lit Ready, bringing over a decade of expertise in Chinese language education, school-based curriculum planning, and official standardized assessment development. She taught secondary school in Hong Kong for more than fifteen years, primarily leading the Chinese Language curriculum for Grades 7 to 12 (Secondary 1 to Secondary 6).
During her school teaching career, Ms. Woo adapted school-based curricula annually to support diverse student proficiencies, authored tiered learning materials, and coordinated an array of language and cultural enrichment initiatives. Additionally, she holds more than ten years of frontline experience providing learning interventions and emotional support for students with Special Education Needs (SEN). Through regular professional development focused on dyslexia and speech therapy, she developed deep, nuanced practical expertise in accommodating individual learning differences and resolving language acquisition barriers.
Ms. Woo was appointed for multiple years by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong (EDB) as an item writer for the Pre-Secondary One Hong Kong Attainment Test (Pre-S1 HKAT), developing citywide standardized assessment papers. She was also regularly appointed by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) as an examiner for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Chinese Language Examination and the Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) for Secondary 3, giving her an authoritative command of language competency frameworks and assessment benchmarks.
This rigorous background in classroom instruction and educational research forms the cornerstone of her educational work abroad. After moving to Canada, Ms. Woo joined local Cantonese classrooms and witnessed firsthand how children growing up in English-dominant environments encounter language gaps—understanding without speaking, or speaking without being able to read and write. She deeply understood the frustration overseas parents face when trying to find systematic, high-quality learning resources.
To address these challenges, Ms. Woo designed a dedicated learning pathway tailored to overseas children. She spearheaded the development of the Hanzi Odyssey everyday reading series and the Stroke Order Practice Corner tiered character-writing workbooks. These resources put into practice the core pedagogical principles of "recognition before writing" (decoupling reading from writing) and "observation before pen strokes." By connecting language to real-life local experiences and integrating visual thinking with gamified design, she guides children smoothly from recognition to literacy—helping them build confidence in authentic spoken Cantonese and Traditional Chinese writing through an engaging, proven, and developmentally sound methodology.

Mr. Tang is the co-founder of Get Lit Ready, bringing over fifteen years of multi-disciplinary experience as a secondary school educator, university curriculum researcher, multimedia producer, journalist, editor, and think tank communications strategist. During his tenure at the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), he served on the Chinese Language Learning Support Scheme for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Students, an initiative funded by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR). In this role, he advised secondary schools on school-based curriculum development, delivered professional development workshops for educators, and participated in multiple applied pedagogical research projects, developing deep insight into learning hurdles and effective interventions in Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) education.
In classroom teaching, Mr. Tang currently instructs Chinese at a language school in Canada. He previously taught in Hong Kong secondary schools, leading Chinese Language and Chinese History curricula for Grades 7 to 12 (Secondary 1 to Secondary 6) while serving as the Coordinator for the Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) Curriculum. He possesses comprehensive expertise in major international examination and assessment frameworks, including the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), the International Baccalaureate (IB), and UK GCE / IGCSE / GCSE Chinese curricula, having served in official roles as a public examination assessor and examiner.
Beyond classroom instruction, Mr. Tang integrates a background in mass communications, trade publishing, and digital media operations. He has served as an editor for prominent cultural figures, intellectuals, and best-selling authors, and managed publishing projects for leading newspaper columnists. Writing under his own name and pen names, his investigative journalism and cultural commentaries have appeared in major broadsheets including Ming Pao, Apple Daily, and Sing Tao Daily. He has authored books across travel, social sciences, and education, consulted on Vocational Chinese curricula for post-secondary institutions, and authored instructional packages funded by the Quality Education Fund (QEF). In recent years, he has spearheaded cultural magazines, digital marketing initiatives, and educational media channels, dedicated to translating authentic Cantonese culture and Chinese linguistic heritage into engaging, accessible multimedia content.
Mr. Tang firmly believes that language learning must remain grounded in its core purpose: authentic communication. Our curriculum decisively moves away from outdated mechanical copying and rote memorization, focusing instead on guiding learners to structure their thinking and apply language dynamically within real-world contexts—ensuring they can speak fluently, write with clarity, and use Chinese with confidence.
